Multi-Cloud FinOps Architect

Location: India, Remote

Work Experience: 10+ years overall, with 5+ years in cloud cost management / FinOps

Requirements:

  • Deep, hands-on expertise in at least two of AWS, Azure, and GCP — and strong working knowledge of the third.
  • Proven hands-on experience with native billing tooling:
    • AWS: Cost Explorer, CUR, AWS Budgets, Trusted Advisor, Compute Optimizer, Savings Plans, RIs.
    • Azure: Cost Management + Billing, Advisor, Reservations, Hybrid Benefit, EA/MCA portal.
    • GCP: Billing Reports, Recommender, CUDs, BigQuery billing export analysis.
  • Strong SQL skills - able to write complex queries against CUR, Azure billing exports, and GCP BigQuery billing data.
  • Hands-on with IaC (Terraform mandatory; CloudFormation/Bicep/Pulumi a plus) and ability to embed cost controls into pipelines.
  • Experience implementing at least one enterprise FinOps platform (Cloudability, CloudHealth, Flexera, Finout, Vantage, etc.).
  • Demonstrable savings track record - quantified cost reductions, commitment portfolio management, and unit-cost improvements.
  • Strong understanding of Kubernetes cost management (Kubecost / OpenCost) and container/serverless cost models.
  • Excellent stakeholder management - comfortable presenting to CFO/CTO and challenging engineering decisions.
  • FinOps Certified Practitioner (FOCP) or FinOps Certified Professional from the FinOps Foundation.
  • Cloud certifications: AWS Solutions Architect Professional, Azure Solutions Architect Expert, Google Professional Cloud Architect.
  • Experience with FOCUS (FinOps Open Cost & Usage Specification) adoption.
  • Exposure to SaaS cost management (Snowflake, Databricks, Datadog, MongoDB Atlas).
  • Sustainability / GreenOps and carbon-aware computing experience.
  • Background in managing AI/ML and GPU workload costs (Bedrock, SageMaker, Azure OpenAI, Vertex AI).
  • Experience in regulated industries (BFSI, Healthcare, Telco).
  • Strong analytical and storytelling skills - able to translate billing data into business narratives.
  • Negotiation and vendor management with hyperscalers and resellers.
  • Comfortable operating in ambiguity, driving consensus across Engineering and Finance.
  • Automation bias; allergic to manual spreadsheets at scale.
  • Coaching mindset - builds capability in others rather than creating dependency.

Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Engineering, Information Systems, or related technical field (or equivalent practical experience).

Job Description:

Strategy & Architecture:

  • Define and own the enterprise FinOps operating model, framework, and roadmap aligned with the FinOps Foundation principles.
  • Architect a unified multi-cloud cost visibility and accountability platform across AWS, Azure, and GCP.
  • Establish tagging, account/subscription/project hierarchy, and chargeback / showback models.
  • Define KPIs and unit economics (cost per customer, per transaction, per environment, per product).

Hands-On Cost Optimization:

  • Analyze billing data using AWS Cost Explorer, CUR (Cost & Usage Reports), Athena, Azure Cost Management, Azure EA/MCA billing exports, GCP Billing BigQuery exports.
  • Identify and execute savings opportunities: rightsizing, idle resource elimination, storage tiering, reserved capacity, Savings Plans, Committed Use Discounts (CUDs), Azure Reservations, and spot/preemptible strategies.
  • Optimize Kubernetes (EKS, AKS, GKE) costs using tools like Kubecost, OpenCost, and namespace-level chargeback.
  • Drive architectural reviews to embed cost-efficiency into design decisions ("FinOps by design").
  • AI Application and Token optimization is a big plus.

Tooling & Automation:

  • Implement and administer FinOps platforms such as Apptio Cloudability, CloudHealth by VMware, Flexera, Finout, Vantage, Spot.io, ProsperOps, or Anodot.
  • Build automated dashboards and reports in Power BI, Tableau, Looker, QuickSight, or Grafana.
  • Develop scripts and automations using Python, Terraform, PowerShell, or Bash to enforce tagging policies, auto-shutdown, and anomaly remediation.
  • Configure budget alerts, anomaly detection, and forecasting models.

Governance & Operations:

  • Establish cost guardrails using AWS Service Control Policies, Azure Policy, and GCP Organization Policies.
  • Implement automated tagging enforcement and remediation workflows. Lead monthly/quarterly cost reviews with engineering and business stakeholders.
  • Partner with Finance on budgeting, forecasting, accruals, amortization of commitments, and variance analysis.
  • Manage Enterprise Agreement (EA), Private Pricing Agreements (PPA), and EDP negotiations with cloud providers.

Culture & Enablement:

  • Run internal FinOps enablement programs, workshops, and office hours.
  • Build and mentor a small team of FinOps analysts and engineers.
  • Evangelize a culture of cost accountability among engineering teams.

Success Metrics (First 12 Months):

  • Single pane of glass for multi-cloud cost visibility live and adopted.
  • 90%+ tagging compliance across all cloud accounts.
  • Documented X% cost optimization (typically 15–30%) without performance impact.
  • Commitment coverage and utilization targets (>85% utilization, >70% coverage) consistently met.
  • Forecasting accuracy within ±5% of actuals month-over-month.
  • Established FinOps Center of Excellence with active engineering participation.
